As part of its contribution to advocate for gender equality and social inclusion reforms in the land sector; NETRIGHT in partnership with its regional focal points and LAWA (Ghana) implemented the 30-month project (July 2017 – May 2020[1]) which sought to work towards addressing challenges confronting rural women and vulnerable groups in order to improve women's access, ownership and control of land to enhance their land tenure security and economic rights. The project mobilised support for the passage of a GESI responsive Land Bill and contributed to evidence-based advocacy for gender and social inclusion reforms in the land sector to protect livelihoods of rural women farmers. NETRIGHT facilitated series of engagements across the country with different stakeholders to create awareness on the Land Bill, discussed gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) gaps in the land sector, advocated for GESI-responsive land governance and engaged Parliament for support for GESI provisions in the Bill. In addition, a selected number of farmers and CSOs were trained on land-related laws and policies. The project targeted both direct and indirect beneficiaries – these included rural women smallholder farmers and Women’s Rights Organisations (WROs) across the country; and other stakeholders identified by the project. Through vigorous evidenced-based advocacy for the retention of the GESI provisions in the Land Bill, the Bill was passed in 2020 with the GESI provisions intact. The project was sponsored by STAR Ghana Foundation “with funding from UK aid, EUROPEAN UNION and DANIDA”.
