The Network for Women’s Rights in Ghana (NETRIGHT), Women’s Manifesto Coalition (WMC),
DV Coalition (DV Coalition) and Affirmative Action Law Coalition have sent a congratulatory message to all the women who contested in the just ended National Elections.
According to the coalition, despite the numerous hurdles the women faced as female politicians, they managed to put up an impressive performance.
In a statement signed by all the group’s Convenors, “We congratulate female parliamentarians elect and indicate our support in your role as Members of Parliament who must push for gender-responsive legislation during your term in office to advance women and girls’ rights and advancement in the country. To those who lost their seats and first timers who did not make it, we are proud of you for your resilience and determination. Through your efforts you have demonstrated that women in Ghana can and are more than able to run for office. May you regroup and come back stronger in 2028. Once again, congratulations to all female contestants!!! ” the statement concluded.
NETRIGHT, on December 7 and 8 deployed election monitoring teams to selected constituencies where female Parliamentary candidates were Contesting under the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) programme. This forms part of the Star Ghana Foundation intervention on Inclusive Elections and Accountable Governance initiative.
The Monitoring Centre served as a hub for tracking and analyzing the inclusion of women and marginalized groups during the 2024 elections, providing real-time updates and insights.
Addressing Journalists in Accra, Patricia Blankson Akakpo, the Head of Secretariat indicated that, “The project looks beyond election 2024, but we also know that as part of the protocols that the Electoral Commission has put in place are some gender equality and social inclusion measures, such that if the aged go to the polling stations, are the places accessible; If there is a nursing mother, do they have to stand in long queues in the sun or If there is a pregnant woman and so on?. So this is what the network is looking at. One of the things we did was to train observers from our member organizations that work on governance issues across the country.
We couldn’t train observers for all the regions. So what we did was to concentrate on especially constituencies that have female candidates contesting in this elections. We developed an app where the observers on the field, after observing the protocol measures, completed the app and sent it.
So this is the centre we call the Election GESI Monitoring Center, where we receive the reports from the field”.
NETRIGHT after the elections is expected to produce a report on the positives and infractions and where necessary abuse of rights of female Parliamentary Candidates who contested in the December 7 polls.
